Kristin Beck‘s social media accounts show a beaming, muscular brunette. She now works in the private sector and as a civilian in the DoD, but Twitter and LinkedIn describe her as a “retired US Navy Seal.” An odd credit, considering women are still currently barred from all combat positions in the US military, including special forces.

But until recently, Beck was known as Chris. Born biologically male, Kristin served as a Navy SEAL for 20 years. After retiring in 2011, Beck felt ready to “come out” as transgender and begin her transition from male to female.

Beck’s amazing story is revealed in her new memoir, titled Warrior Princess. Released this week, the book and media coverage are introducing the US and the world to this “first female Navy SEAL.”

Early coverage and publicity describe the young Beck as a “manly man,” growing up as a lower-middle class farm boy in the middle of nowhere who loved sports. She had a military career spanning two decades, resulting in thirteen tours, a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star, and ending on the elite SEAL Team 6. (It appears Beck retired just months before that group carried out the raid that killed Osama Bin Laden.)
